Dr. V’s 14 Secrets for a Longer Healthier Life
1. Health Education
- One of the most important things that an individual can do in taking his/her health into his/her own hands is to keep abreast of the latest in health news and information. Be wise. Some news sources tend to confuse you with contradictory reports. An excellent source is my latest book Your Health Is in Your Own Hands, and the book I did with David Bunnell, Count Down your Age. There is information about them on my website vagnini.com,
which is also a reliable source of health information, as I have been dedicated in my practice to health education for 25 years. Check out also podjocky.com where you will find reliable and up-to-date health and preventive/health maintenance information on anti-aging.

The Toxic Effects
of Belly Fat Obesity
The technical term is “visceral adiposity.” Or call it “central obesity.” No matter; my point is - and it is scientifically true - that a fat belly
is a source of toxins, inflammatory cytokines that present a risk for serious diseases: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, dementia, Alzheimer’s. We take in thousands of toxins every day from the air we breathe, from eating and drinking - and subsequently these toxins are stored in belly fat. It follows that where there is an abundance of belly fat - as in visceral adiposity or central obesity - there is an abundance of toxins.

A new and exciting service from Dr. Vagnini
John Procacci is the award- winning chef of Healthy Chef Creations a new feature of the Heart Diabetes & Weight Loss Centers of New York. He is the culinary creator of over 1000 diet menu items, all organic, to be custom ordered and delivered overnight . . . fresh! This is not a program of processed food you hear advertised by football players. It is fresh, and it is gourmet! Chef Procacci’s skills in the kitchen derive from years at Disney’s Buena Vista Palace, in Orlando where his business is located, and other fine dining settings in addition to studies and research at the American Health University.
Chef Procacci can create a weight loss program designed to satisfy personal preference and dietary needs. It is not necessary, he believes - and has proven - to sacrifice satisfying taste in order to keep on a healthy diet. A diet meal will include a lean protein, a complex carbohydrate, and a vegetable or fruit, and usually a tincture of flavorful healthy fat. Yes, healthy fat. He recommends “good fats,” such as first-pressed olive oil,
canola, flax, and safflower oils. Also Earth Balance butter, a trans-fat-free, high in omega 3 fatty acids, alternative to butter.

Controlling Cortisol
The Good and Bad of Cortisol and How to Keep in Under Control.
Cortisol is a natural hormone, and like all hormones it does wonderful things for the body. It maintains blood glucose at a healthy level: no hyperglycemia (too much sugar, possible diabetes), no hypoglycemia (too little sugar, weakness, fatigue). It improves cardiac function and blood flow, regulates blood pressure and promotes good metabolism. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands at a steady pace and as needed in response to stress. It is a part of a complex network that responds to the stimuli of the endocrine, nervous, and immune systems. When the body is exposed to internal or external stress, the brain sends a message to the adrenal glands to increase cortisol secretion. The body responds by providing a surge of energy, increasing mental alertness, and raising blood pressure, thereby preparing the body for the “fight-or-flight” response.

Urges A1C Test as the Main Diagnostic Tool
A few months ago, in a Longevity Report
on “managing pre-diabetes,” I outlined the usual tests for diabetes: fasting plasma glucose, oral glucose tolerance, hemoglobin A1C, and urine sample. Punisher: War Zone divx Last month at the Annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in New Orleans, a panel of experts made a strong case for using the A1C test as the main tool for diagnosing diabetes. Adrenal Fatigue Underlies Many of Today’s Health Problems
What is adrenal fatigue
? About a decade ago, James L. Wilson PhD, a Doctor of Nutrition and Naturopathic Medicine from the University of Arizona, wrote a book on what he subtitled “The 21st Century Stress Syndrome.” It did not at the time make much impact on the physician community. Not surprising. Adrenal fatigue was first described by a physician in the 19th century; and this science has taken more than 100 years to trickle down to clinical practice. It is important to me because many of the people who come into my Centers with cardiac disease, diabetes or obesity are found to be afflicted with some aspect of adrenal fatigue, particularly since adrenal fatigue is a contributing factor in insulin resistance, weight gain and diabetes. I’ll explain.

MORE ON VITAMIN D!
Superhero Movie movie full
In July of this year, The Longevity Report featured an article on vitamin D that I titled “Vitamin D Makes the News.” That was just the beginning. Now an article in last month’s (12/9/08) Journal of the American College of Cardiology
entitled “Vitamin D Deficiency; an Important, Common, and Easily Treatable Cardiovascular Risk Factor,” offers a review of the numerous research projects on vitamin D that have been going on for several years and appear to have reached critical mass in exposing and defining a significant health problem. This issue of The Longevity Report
will give a synthesis of this research showing how vitamin D is implicated in each of several ailments addressed in my practice at the Heart, Diabetes and Weight Loss Centers.

Aged Kyolic: Interview with Jim LaValle
I interviewed Jim LaValle on my WOR 710 radio program, “The Heart Show,” on Sunday February 15. Jim is a pharmacist (RPh) and a board certified clinical nutritionist (CCN), with more than 20 years clinical practice experience in the field of natural and integrative therapies. He is the founder of the LaValle Metabolic Institute in Cincinnati, and the author of the book (among many) Cracking the Metabolic Code.
The goal of Jim’s work is very much like mine: as he puts it, “to make people feel better.” The first step in that endeavor is determining what the problem is. As we do here at my Centers, Jim takes advantage of today’s medical technologies. Ultrasound imaging, for example, can tell us much about the heart and the cardiovascular system. From this point, we look for effective therapies. The therapy Jim LaValle talked about in our interview is kyolic; Kenny hd
